Huneke’s Neural Therapy

Huneke’s neural therapy is a holistic injection treatment using procaine 1% — a mild local anesthetic without additives — and one of the most powerful regulatory therapies known. Procaine has been available in medicine for well over 100 years, and in 1925, the doctors and brothers Ferdinand and Walter Huneke laid the foundation for today’s neural therapy according to Huneke by treating their patients with procaine. It is used worldwide by trained physicians, and the relevant medical societies organize training and continuing education programs (see “References”).

Within the group of local anesthetics, procaine is the substance with the lowest tissue toxicity. Thanks to the use of very thin needles and proper injection technique, neural therapy is exceptionally painless and causes minimal discomfort for the patient. Possible temporary side effects include a slight numbness in the treated area, mild dizziness, changes in taste, and a general sensation of warmth (see “Information and Consent Form”). Despite procaine’s tissue half-life of only about 20 minutes, long-lasting therapeutic results can nonetheless be achieved, which demonstrates the sustained improvement or restoration of the body’s own regulatory mechanisms.

The patient’s personal medical history, follow-up assessments or post-treatment reviews after neural therapy, and a comprehensive and thorough physical examination are of essential importance. The number of sessions required varies greatly. Occasionally, the patient is symptom-free after just one treatment; depending on the complexity of the underlying conditions, 5 – 10 neural therapy sessions may be required to achieve a satisfactory result.

A distinction is made between segmental therapy (e.g., on the painful knee), suprasegmental injections, injections into autonomic nerve fibers or ganglia (clusters of nerve cell bodies), injections into myofascial trigger points, and so-called interference field therapy. Interference fields are anatomically defined regions in the body that emit frequencies not subjectively perceptible, which are considered to be triggers of diseases. One or more interference fields are often the source of chronic health problems. Typical interference fields include scars from injuries or surgeries, the paranasal sinuses, the thyroid gland, the tonsils, dental and jaw structures, and certain nerve plexuses in the body. Identifying the interference fields that trigger an individual’s specific clinical picture is the greatest challenge for the neural therapist. Neural therapeutic treatment of interference fields using procaine can cure a disease — sometimes for years — and can be repeated at any time if symptoms recur or worsen (“Any chronic illness or problem can be caused by interference fields!”). A particularly impressive aspect of interference field treatment is the occurrence of the so-called “second phenomenon,” in which the reported symptoms disappear immediately during or shortly after the neural therapeutic injection.

Typical indications for Huneke’s neural therapy:

  • All acute or chronic pain conditions, including headache syndromes and migraines
  • Chronic postoperative pain (CPSP)
  • Myofascial pain syndromes (muscle trigger points)
  • Fibromyalgia and “soft tissue rheumatism”
  • “Neuropathic” pain (trigeminal neuralgia, among others)
  • Disorders of the musculoskeletal system (orthopedics & trauma surgery)
  • Gynecological conditions (premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhea, menopause, dyspareunia, chronic pelvic pain syndrome [CPPS], and many others)
  • ENT disorders (chronic nasal obstruction, sinusitis, susceptibility to throat infections, tinnitus, etc.)
  • Dermatological conditions
  • Adjunctive treatment for psychiatric and psychosomatic disorders
  • Any chronic condition …
