Neural Therapy
Informed Consent Form for Huneke´s Neural Therapy
This document will be handed to you by Dr. Bengen during your appointment.
General Information:
Huneke´s neural therapy is an injection treatment using 1% procaine — a mild local anesthetic without additives — and is one of the most effective therapies in regulatory medicine. The goal of regulatory therapy is to identify the causes of the malfunctions that have occurred and to improve — and, if possible, restore — the affected function. Thanks to the use of very fine needles and proper injection technique, neural therapy is exceptionally painless and causes minimal discomfort for the patient.
Procaine is metabolized in the body with a tissue half-life of approximately 20 minutes; however, its effects can last for years in some cases. It acts on the ground substance, nerve fibers in general, and the vegetative (autonomic) nervous system in particular, and can restore the physiological state when oscillations are disrupted. Health problems caused by interference fields (e.g., a cesarean section scar causing back pain) can only be cured by locally treating the interference field with procaine.
For each neural therapy approach, a detailed review of the patient’s personal medical history, interim follow-ups, and follow-up consultations, as well as a comprehensive physical examination of the patient, are of essential importance.
Typical indications for neural therapy according to Huneke include all acute or chronic pain conditions, including headaches and migraines, disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and various clinical conditions across various medical specialties (internal medicine, ENT, gynecology, neurology, dermatology, etc.).
There are various patterns of the body’s response to neural therapy, which must be carefully analyzed by the neural therapist during the follow-up consultation. The most important of these are the healing crisis and the so-called reaction phenomenon. In the former, there is a temporary worsening of symptoms before an improvement occurs. In the reaction phenomenon, there is also a temporary worsening of symptoms, but subsequently the condition returns to its initial state without any improvement. This is almost always a clear indication of the presence of so-called interference fields, which must then be located and treated with neural therapy in order to resolve the problem in the long term. Rarer phenomena, such as the retrograde Hopfer phenomenon and the neighborhood phenomenon, are discussed on a case-by-case basis.
Side Effects and Complications:
The side effects of Huneke’s neural therapy are very mild and generally unproblematic. A slight numbness (due to the local anesthetic) or a sensation of warmth may occur at the treated sites. Systemically, mild dizziness, slightly increased sweating, a slight change in taste, and occasionally emotional reactions may occur. All of these symptoms subside within a short time (on average 10–15 minutes). These side effects vary from person to person and depend on the total amount of procaine administered. Medical supervision immediately following neural therapy is an essential part of daily practice.
Complications are extremely rare (≤ 0.01%) when neural therapy is performed according to best practices. Depending on the treated area and injection depth, small bruises may occur in the tissue; however, these are naturally reabsorbed by the body. Incorrect injections (e.g., into arterial vessels leading to the brain) can be reliably prevented by following proper procedures.
